MBYC sails into summer with the Annual Blessing of the Fleet for all area boaters on Memorial Day.
Commodore Tom Slanec encourages all area boaters to take part in the annual “Blessing of the Fleet” event. The MBYC Commodores and Father Charles Brown will stand in front of the Club facing Lake Macatawa where they will respectively review and bless the fleet.
All boats rendezvous at 11:15am at the orange buoy located east of the Club. Please maintain approximately 4 boat lengths between vessels. Communications will be held on VHF channel 69. The sailing vessel “TALARIA” will lead the parade of boats.
The diagram below shows the course the parade will take. At 11:30am, with the sound of a gun, the parade will begin. Each vessel will pass in front of MBYC and, as it comes abeam, the vessel’s captain and crew will exchange salutes with the Commodore, receive the vessel’s blessing and proceed towards and around the “Green Channel Marker” leaving room for the remaining vessels. When the Commodore returns the salute of each yacht, the Reverend will give a short blessing and move on to the next yacht where the procedure is repeated. Two guns will sound at the completion of the “Blessing of the Fleet”.
All yachts participating in the ceremony are encouraged, but not required, to dress ship with signal flags in traditional order.
After the Blessing, all boats and their crews are invited to return to MBYC where the Buoy Room will be open.
