Miami, Florida February 6, 7, and 8
Round two of the Melges 20 Winter Series saw two windy, shifty days followed by one perfect day for 37 crews to enjoy as they battled their way through 8 races. Four of those teams were from Macatawa Bay Yacht Club, on Bacio, Heartbreaker, Peshmerga and YOLO.
Starts were aggressive with several general recalls. Sometimes the Z flag had to be used to keep starters in line. This is a very competitive group. If you remember them from the Melges 20 Nationals we’ve hosted, you’d know. Racing was tight and crowded. Crossings were close. Clean air and a clear lane was key. Catching the shift, critical.
Michael Kiss and crew on Bacio had consistently strong finishes and by race 7, were in a dominating position. Drew Wierda with Peshmerga was close behind. YOLO with Tony Tabb and Steve Sisson and Heartbreaker skippered by Bob Hughes followed in the point standings.
By the last race, Bacio had a five point advantage over the next boat, STIG. Kiss forced STIG into a bad start, (in classic match racing fashion), that put them on the unfavored side of the course. STIG fought back valiantly, but could not catch the lead group to score the much needed points to beat Bacio. YOLO finished near Bacio. Peshmerga and Heartbreaker were not far behind.
Michael Kiss and crew won the regatta. Peshmerga finished 11, YOLO 17th and Heartbreaker 25th.
Beautiful weather, great racing and good friends is what it is all about. In a few weeks, it will be time for round three and a clean slate.
