Melges Rocks Regatta March 12 – 14 Miami, Florida
Thirty three Melges 20’s assembled in Miami for the Melges Rocks Regatta. The Coconut Grove Sailing Club hosted the event and went all out to help manage things on and off shore.
Biscayne Bay served up near perfect conditions with a constant East breeze ranging from 12 – 18 knots and air temperatures just under 80 all weekend long.
Michael Kiss and crew were there with Bacio as well as Bob Hughes and team on Heartbreaker.
There were eight races over three days. John Kilroy’s Samba Pa Ti was on a roll with no finish over fourth and his son, Liam, was close behind on Wildman. Racing was as tight as ever and conditions were so good. There were many isolated battles for better position on the course. The crews of Bacio and Heartbreaker fought hard to gain advantage and move up.
In the end, Samba Pa Ti finished first with Portobello second and Wildman third. Bacio was fifth and Heartbreaker twenty first.
Melges Rocks marked the end of the Winter Series and was a run up to the Nationals and Worlds. Melges 20 sailors were in peak trim as they honed their skills for the next event, US National Championship at Charleston Race Week.
