The racing at the 2019 Ugotta Regatta delivered all the best that Northern Michigan has to offer! Two beautiful days of racing in one most beautiful venues in the world, Little Traverse Bay. Saturday offered a classic SW/W breeze that held through the entire afternoon which allowed the RC to set long courses for the traditional “Tour of the Bay’ course which has become the norm at this event. (One design racing started on Friday and these classes traditionally race W/L legs.) Sunday started off as a perfect day for maybe golf, as the harbor was a milk pond. But then a nice breeze eventually filled in for a beautiful afternoon of racing to finish out the weekend.
MBYC was well represented, with 7 boats in the various division splits. The big winner of the weekend, with two bullets from Saturday and Sunday, was Team Utah, in the PHRF A division of 7 boats. They were the only yacht to finish with all 1st place finishes in the regatta – well done! Usual Suspect finished 6th in the same division.
Five TP52’s battled over 3 days of racing, and two MBYC based boats ended up on the podium. The Devos owned Windquest took second, and Heartbreaker (Bob Hughes) scoring a 3rd. Only 3 points separated 1st from 3rd in this tightly contested group of 5 TP52’s.
There were 11 entries in the ORR Division, which is the same handicap rating system the Chicago to Mackinac race uses. Don Thinschmidt’s Abracadabra took a spot on the podium with a 3rd place finish. Mitch Padnos with Sufficient Reason was 5th, and Guy Heistand’s Gauntlet were 11th in the same division.
